Last weekend me, Steve Walsh and Marcus and Ross Hammond did the cycle for Scotland Glasgow to Edinburgh charity bike ride. It was great. We did the 53 miles no probs. On the way back to Reykjavík we went to visit an active geysir. The Great Geysir that’s in the Guinness Book of Records no longer erupts but it’s wee brother “Strokkur” still does. Very hot.

After a trip to a glacier on skidoos (which was organised by Eider Gudjohnsen’s mum) we trekked back in a bit of a blizzard. You wouldn’t believe how cold it was – and I’m Scottish.

Smells a wee bit like egg but is still amazing. -15 degrees above the water and toasting below. The water temperature is constantly changing so you have to follow the hot patches around!

When you come out of the water you need to get to your towels quick as the wind chill takes your breath. Thirty seconds of standing on the wooden deck and your feet feel like blocks of ice.

According to Wikipedia “In 2006, 26.5% of electricity generation in Iceland came from geothermal energy, 73.4% from hydro power, and 0.1% from fossil fuels.” Knowledge is the bomb.

Iceland trip

My work, Elmwood, has won an award for the work we did for the University of Aberdeen. Just before Christmas we created a student accommodation guide that has been warmly received both by the client and now by McNaughton Papers.

For those that don’t know, McNaughton are a leading paper company and like to have an
expensive annual awards do. This year it was in Reykyavík and, as Graeme Cook was over watching England getting beat at cricket in Trinidad, I was asked, as I did all the artwork on the job, if I fancied going over to collect the award. What could I do but say yes.

As well as the awards, we went 4x4 snow roading, ski-dooing, stood on a glacier, checked out some volcanic activity, danced along a tectonic plate, ate puffin, shredded wind-dried cod and rotten shark (which actually tasted worse than it sounds) and swam in a geothermal lake.

The whole trip was absolutely amazing and, if you get the chance to go to Iceland, grab it. Here’s the work and the trip in nice colour pictures.

The frog is back in the pond again. Spotted him the other day. He sat in the same spot all day.

We got the new 'hens' in two weeks ago. We gave the two cockerels back to the breeder as it's very difficult to squeeze eggs out of them. We've been assured that these two are definitely female.

Feathers crossed we might get some eggs in the summer time.

They are taking their time settling in but, slowly, they are finding their feet. In the pics here it was a nice sunny afternoon and they were doing a spot of sunbathing.

These chickens are again Silkies but, unlike the previous two, they are Blue Silkies. We've called one Lavender and one Thumbelina as she's tiny and missing a toe.

We got a stove on Wednesday. It's magic. We got it from The Fireplace in Haddington and, as it's the first stove I've ever used, I was a bit sceptical of how good they actually are. This wee guy is great. We've not had the central heating on since Wednesday.

World's biggest ever misquote?

You know what really gets on my tits? It's that every single time Jose Mourinho is mentioned on tv or in the written press they always put in quotes "the special one". It is a huge misquote that has annoyed me for years. Jose is arrogant, confrontational and loads of other stuff but he has been given the label of "the special one" which makes him sound like he thinks he's the best, hand picked by a higher being, and better than any other manager. He actually said he thought, after winning the European Cup with a small European team like Porto, that he was "a special one". This means he thinks that he's not the best but that he's in the upper bracket of managers. I think his record shows that he was right with that claim.

Here's his quote in full:
“I’m not a defender of old or new football managers. I believe in good ones and bad ones, those that achieve success and those that don’t. Please don’t call me arrogant, but I’m European champion and I think I’m a special one.”

I'm glad I got that off my chest. Up yours lazy journalists. Nobody reads this blog except for you, so, whenever you hear the misquote, think of me and have a little laugh because we know better.

We had a visitor at the weekend. A pheasant decided to have a wee drink out our pond. By the time I got the camera out he was just about ready to bolt. Luckily I got one photograph to remember him by. He was really noisy as he flew off too.

HDR photography

I had my first shot at High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography on Saturday morning.

Took the camera and a tripod out in the garden and took 5 shots, each with a different amount of exposure, ranging from darkest, darker, average, light and lighter

Then I bring them into Photoshop CS3 and let it combine them so that you end up with a very well exposed shot that holds the highlights without them getting blown out and dark, rich shadows which retain detail. A few wee tweaks and it's done.

Basically, it's a bit of digital folacio. I'm going to try some shots at the beach etc and see how they turn out.

I think half of Dalkeith Country Park has been chopped down and delivered to our back door. We're getting an Aga Little Wenlock Classic stove next month and took delivery of the seasoned logs on Saturday morning. Should keep us warm for ages!

I spoke to the shuy from All Year Round Birds today to ask why we've not had any eggs yet from our hens? I was told that it's because of the lack of sun light at this time of the year. I asked him why both out hens crow in the morning? Silence on the other end of the phone. "Eh, because you might have two cockerels."

When i played down the phone the video I posted the other week so he could hear them he said, "yeah, that's not a hen".

That's probably more to do with the lack of eggs then the sunlight thing.

Anyway, we've to take them out next week to his place and he's going to replace them. So it turns out that they are more Stevie and Bert than Sissy and Betty.

Went to the Ansel Adams exhibition today at the City Arts Centre at the back of The Waverly train station. It's brilliant!

Went to Klondyke Garden Centre in Mortonhall, Edinburgh on Sunday. Whilst walking around we could hear the chirping of a wee bird. We eventually found it, a Robin that was as gallas as you like. Not budging when you went near him or nothing. Kinda cute though.

Sharlene and I went for a drive with the dogs on Saturday and pitched up, we think, at Baddinsgill Reservoir. It was beautiful.

The sun shone and we had a wander along the edge of the water, walked up a hill and had a cup of tea from a flask whilst sitting on a tree stump. We saw a huge buzzard, flocks of geese and got back to our car whilst it was surrounded by Highland Coos.

Sharlene's pal Angie gave Calvin a Homer Simpson 3D jigsaw for Christmas and we did it on Wednesday night. Calvin, Angie, Sharlene and me worked for hours but managed to get it done.

132 separate wee jigsaws laid on top of each other to make a big bust of Homer. Calvin is well chuffed. Well done to us all.

I managed to reach the final of the inaugural Elmwood Table Tennis Championship 2007. It took a lot of sweat and vomit but I got there. However, in the final I was pumped two games to nil by Paul Sudron. But I don't like to talk about that bit.

My work had it's Edinburgh, Leeds and London Christmas party last Friday down in York. The theme was the Rat Pack and everyone had to dress accordingly. I, however, went for the more relaxed look of a pastel blue polo neck, green cardigan, yellow loons, slicked back hair and a pencil 'tache rather than the obvious black suit and pencil tie everybody else went for.

Of course I won best dressed male. Duh!

Moonshine on Leith

We all went to the top of Calton hill the other weekend. It was brilliant. Really biting cold, scarily windy and getting darker every second.

Fantastic views over the Forth. Calvin liked the view of the Forth Bridge and the road bridge.

Princes Street looks great with the ferris wheel and all the other Christmas bits and bobs. I might take the camera and get some good pictures around Princes Street. Edinburgh is great.

And I think I even managed to take a photograph the Proclaimers could use for their next album cover. Hibs were playing Dundee United at Easter Road and the moon was directly above their stadium. You can see Berwick Law in the far distance too. Perfect.

On the way home, Sharlene was taking pictures whilst we were driving. She caught a cool picture of folk standing at the traffic lights.

Me, Calvin and Sharlene were invited on a tour of the Glenkinchie whisky distillery by Cameron last Saturday.

Very interesting it was too. Or what I remember of it. The tour started with a few wee tasters and then the next thing I remember was Cameron patting my back at the side of the road somewhere in Midlothian saying 'never mind wee man, it's better to get it aw oot.'

Scotland did the usual this weekend but left us all, I think, with a different feeling from normal. Yes we never got to the Euro Championships next summer and yes it was glorious failure, but, it still felt like we've come a long way. It felt like the future World Cup campaign was something to look forward to. We now have a very young but very experienced squad of guys who all run their bollocks off for one another, always keep in mind the game plan set out, don't panic under extreme pressure and know what to do to win big games.

So, well done guys and here's to the World Cup 2010.

We've upgraded our fish tank to a slightly bigger version than we had before. We bought a Resun DMS-500PL and all seems to be going well with it. We used some of the water from the previous tank and got some new live rock - although we still need some more to build up the back properly. Once all the ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH levels were measuring as they should we started putting in the fish.

They've been in for three days now and all of them seem more than happy with their new hoose. Fingers crossed, things might look really cool when we've finished landscaping it and gett in some new corals and stuff.

The Big Dipper

Trying some night shots again. This time with my new infra-red remote control.

These shots were taken from my back garden. As you can see, the Big Dipper looks pretty smooth above our house. The orange glow on the really long exposure (635 elephants) is actually all the light from Edinburgh! Cool.

I like the way you can see the earths rotation on a couple of them.

I was trying some long exposure stuff (phfnar) with my camera on a tripod the other night.

Check out the picture of the ripple clouds around the moon and the shot of the stars. The reddy thing on the right is a hawthorn tree moving in the wind.

For those who have seen Gregory's Girl, I did 45 elephants for the stars and 25 elephants for the moon.

Another wee interesting shot is the one of an aeroplane going over with it's lights flashing on and off.

Warhol exhibition

Went to see the exhibition at the gallery at the bottom of the Mound on Friday with my new work (elmwood).

It was actually pretty good. I'm not the biggest fan of Warhol's stuff but, I have to say, it was pretty cool seeing it in the flesh.

I really liked his Elvis, the image of the gun and his kids room with the robot and silver fish were really cool.

We are keeping the dogs water bowl outside now that the weather got a little warmer and just about every morning some baby frogs appear in it from the night before. I bet they totally laugh it up during the night - snapping their mini towels as they get dry, wee-ing in the pool and stuff and that.

I took this picture of a bumbler in the garden on Saturday. It's a little out of focus but I wasn't using a tripod or anything. I still like it though.

I might, if the sun ever comes out again, set up the shot and play the waiting game. Hopefully I'll get the bee with a faster shutter speed so you can properly see it's tongue still hanging out like you can just about make out in this one.

Harry Potter and the Prisoners of Hype

Yeah, so we thought we would nip in at midnight on Friday and maybe join the queue of around 50 folk waiting to get the new Harry Potter book at the launch.

Sharlene is a big fan of the books so we pre-booked and imagined we would stroll up at 11.45pm and wait for the doors at Waterstones in Princes Street to open at the witching hour.

As we drove in, past James Thin's book shop – opposite the Festival Theatre on South Bridge, we noticed a large queue of people. 'Ah, I think we might be in a bit of trouble here', I thought.

When driving past an even bigger line of Potter-iets, outside the Waterstones on the East End of Princes Street, the stark reality was beginning to sink in, we were in for a long night.

I shut my eyes as I drove the rest of Princes Street, past the main Waterstones at the West End, along Shandwick Place, and right, to park in Stafford Street opposite Charlie Millers. I opened my eyes and turned to Sharlene, sitting in the passengers seat. 'Was it bad?' I asked her. The blood had drained from her face, her eyes dark, sunken. I could see that her very soul had been bludgeoned.

We walked along past Habitat, lots of kids were all around, excitedly shouting 'Snape is innocent' and 'I'm going to kick Malfoy in his Philosopher's Stones if I see him!'.

Nervously, we reached Princes Street and nearly shat ourselves. The queue of people, young and old, geeks and freaks, snaked from Waterstones front door, past HMV, past GAP, past the two mobile phone shops next to each other, past the games shop that used to be Sports Connection, up the street that leads on to Charlotte's Square, in to Rose Street, 200 yards along Rose Street, did a 180 and came all the way back towards us.

It must have been about 2,000 people long. So, we joined the back of it, duh.

We started queuing at 11.50pm and the folk just kept on joining behind us. At midnight we heard distant cheers as the doors opened and the first punters rushed in to pick up their books. Cool, not long now.

Time flew by as we were entertained by magicians, got free coffee from some Doris dressed up like a witch but still managed to have about 15 Starbucks logos on her outfit, laughed as taxi after taxi after taxi after taxi of drunks drove past shouting 'Harry dies in the end!' and we even had a brilliant old fella who made things from balloons. Calvin got a cool Road Runner made for him.

I was a little hungry so I nipped over to McDonalds and picked up some provisions for the three of us. I even managed to bump in to Darren Jackson who had a burger in each hand and was totally steaming. He was all over the place.

Anyway, as I say, time flew by and it didn't feel like a moment more than three hours and forty-five minutes before we managed to reach the store. Yip, at 3.30am we finally got to the front of the queue and in to the shop to buy the book.

I hope Harry does die.

On Friday the 27th of July i'm leaving Tayburn, where I've worked for the last three years, and joining Elmwood.

I'm a wee bit excited and a little nervous but, fingers crossed, everything should be cool. I met all the guys from Elmwood the other night and everyone seem pretty cool.

I've started cycling in and out of work on my new bike. It's going pretty good.

7.8 miles in and then 7.8 miles home, up hill, both directions.

Takes me 30-35 minutes in the morning (I even managed to over take the No. 29 bus that I normally get) and 40-45 on the way back as it's tough getting up the hill from Cameron Toll to Gilmerton.

My legs aren't sore and I didn't even get a sore erse but, I have to say, my thigh muscles are always hot. Probably too much muscle there.

Some dizzy Doris reversed her pissy wee car in to ours the other night, right outside my house.

I watched her do it, jumped out the house to speak to her but she f**king shot off. I chased after her but she was going down third street whilst i was on foot running down fourth street.

We think we know the person that was being dropped off by her, but, her boyfriend of course said 'no, my birds pal doesn't have a car like that.' Even though he admitted he was waiting on her being dropped off and he paced up and down looking out of his blinds whilst chatting on his mobile - probably telling to be dropped off at Mayfield and walk to the house.

Dicks.

Sharlene has got a Dutch style, Calvin's got a smooth BMX
and I got a 'hybrid' to get me in and out of Edinburgh.

I took mine for a spin the other day and it was brilliant. 6.5 miles in no time and my arse wasn't sore the next day. Which is unusual for me.

Played golf at Deer Park on Sunday. Me, Steve and Ryan were guest of my wee bro Simon. He's a member there now. Oooohh!

Anyway, I was gash, stunk the place out and also gave Ry some very bad tips - 'yeah, a nine iron from here, Ry. Defo.'

Also, it's the first time I've seen it apart from on TV, Steve managed to get his ball stuck up a tree. Cool.

As you can see by the photograph, Sharlene has put a lot of effort into the garden over the years and, as this picture shows, it looks in great condition.

There's so much to look at, variation of plants and, when the flowers come out, so much colour. Well done to you Sharlene, you're brilliant.

After quite a lot of hard work by both Sharlene and me believe it or not, we have managed to change the garden from having a grass area into a paved area with a bench and table on it.

We slaved away in the white hot heat of the summer sun on Saturday and managed to do it all in one day.

And it looks great, too.
